Trichotomy of Man
1. Trichotomy definition: Division into three parts or elements. A system based on three parts or elements.
2. Application
A. Three parts to God: Father, Son, Holy Spirit
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
Jesus is the Word- John 1:1
Mathew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost...
B. Three parts to man: Body, Soul, Spirit
a. Man was made in God's image. Genesis 1:26,27
b. Soul and spirit are separate
1 Thessalonians 5:23... pray God your whole spirit and soul and body...
Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit....
John 4:23,24...must worship Him in spirit and in truth;
Hebrews 4:12 ...dividing asunder of soul and spirit....
c. Our spirit is made alive
John 3:5,6 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Ephesians 2:1-6 ...hath quickened us together...
Colossians 2:13 And you...hath he quickened together with him...
3. Body, Soul, Spirit
A. The body is physical. It is tangible. We operate in connection of our 5 senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. A sense is a physiological capacity of organisms that provides data for perception.
B. The soul is the "self" or "life" or "personality" of a person. It involves the mind, will, emotions, and conscience. It is not physical because it is eternal.
* Mind is memory, reasoning, and imagination.
* Will is the power or faculty of choosing. Free will.
* Emotions is where man feels. i.e. happy, angry, sad, fear.
* Conscience is the moral law of God.
C. The spirit of a man is for a relationship with God. It is a place of fellowship and connection. It is the part of us that can control the old nature.
