Forgiveness
1. David's forgiveness to Absalom
A. 2 Samuel 15:2-7, 8-10 chapter 18:5
2. Definition of forgive: to pardon; to remit; to overlook an offense, and treat the offender as not guilty; forsake, lay aside, leave, let (alone, be, go, have), omit, put (send) away, yield up
A. Forgiveness is part of mercy. Forgiveness is for the sake of the offending party. It is an action of giving, mercy, and benevolence.
B. If we make forgiveness as about us and what our benefits are when we forgive, then we make it about us and not a giving act from a
giving heart. If you view forgiveness as about yourself instead of the other party, then you are making a deal. The deal is: I get my
release of anger, feel good about myself, my reward of God to let this go, etc. in exchange for giving to someone what they don't
deserve.
C. Through eyes of compassion, we should view the people who harmed us as hurting and not walking with God when they caused the
harm. If they weren't suffering with sin, then they would only love.
3. Why we don't forgive
a. To hold a debt or leverage over another to hurt them and/or to feel justified in our pride.
b. Nurse the hurt they have done (keep puffed up-pride).
c. We justify that they don't deserve forgiveness. We take God's place as judge in who deserves forgiveness.
4. Scriptures:
Ephesians 4:32 - And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Matthew 6:15 - But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Colossians 3:13 - Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also [do] ye.
Matthew 5:23,24 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Matthew 18:21,22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Luke 17:3,4 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
